I think the answer is clear as to why they have mostly gone but I'm sure there must be something like the chat room you liked?Ĭan I ask why AOL was hugely popular with you?. I'm not sure about FB as I don't use it I'm afraid. So the idea that all people online were using fake photos and personalities is just a myth, at least back in the late 90's in AOL chat rooms. However, my own personal experience showed that about 90% of people sent me their real photos and their online conversations mirrored their real-life personality. I will admit that picking up ladies in a bar meant you knew 100% what they looked like and could get a decent feel for their overall personality, and meeting people online was more of a "crap shoot" since people can easily send you fake pics and so forth. I wasn't a bad-lookin' fella and I had a decent job and car and my own apartment, but hanging out for a few hours in a noisy bar with a thick cloud of ciggie smoke poisoning the air was never an ideal situation to pick up chicks.
I lived in a smallish city from 1995 to 2001 and my choices were either hang out at the local dive bars or fire up the 56K modem and see what I could find. LOL, that's what I keep trying to say - AOL chat rooms were a boon to my sex life in the late 90's! Many of my male friends ridiculed the idea, but I was happy about that since it meant a larger pool of sexually-available women online all to myself Sight unseen, two strangers would agree to meet and bang? That would revolutionize the lives of the guys here who feel doomed to celibacy and singledom. it's only messaging at first so if you're that good at talking to the ladies and know how to do it then surely OLD you would take to like a duck to water? No but seriously I can see the attraction so wouldn't online dating be enjoyable for you then?. Well yes talking/flirting with the ladies online can be fun (. of flirty conversation, I would get that much-awaited IM from a girl - "Do you wanna come over to my place tonight?" I fancied myself as an online casanova, because many times late at night after a couple hrs.
While I do remember chatting up ladies many states away from me, the majority of the time I was striking up conversations with women who lived within 45 minutes of me. Truth be told, I probably would've found the chat rooms boring without the ZIP code screening tool. Those 2 features were VERY powerful in chatting up total strangers and hoping to meet women offline for sexual encounters. I think the 2 main reasons why AOL chat rooms had enormous appeal to me in the late 90's were because:ġ) It was the "only game in town" for online chatting - there was another chat app called ICQ but it was very clunky by comparisonĢ) It allowed the age, sex, location search for people online close to your ZIP code
